Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer of the head and neck region. As the tumor grows, the patient may experience complications such as local pain, swelling, difficulty swallowing, change in voice, difficulty breathing due to trachea compression, weight loss and the cancer can spread to other organs. The treatment involves total or partial thyroidectomy, in other words, there is thyroid removal.
Complications of thyroid cancer may include. Injury to the voice box and hoarseness after thyroid surgery. Low calcium level from accidental removal of the parathyroid glands during surgery. Spread of the cancer to the lungs, bones, or other parts of the body.
Hypothyroidism, dysphagia due to damage of the upper laryngeal nerve are the complications of thyroid cancer. Spread of the cancer to the lungs, bones, or other parts of the body is another complication.
