Co-infections with other tick-borne pathogens complicate the diagnoses of Lyme disease. Co-infection in the human granulocytic ehrlichiosis - anaplasmosis - leads to even more severe Lyme disease.

Co infections occurs with Lyme disease because tick transmits different species of pathogens. A single tick atleast carries 45 different species. Presence of co infections can significantly causes diagnostic problems. Because Lyme treatment doesn't resolve the symptoms of co infections, have to diagnose pathogen and need to treat accordingly. Co infections causes more symptoms and long recovery period. It also effects on health and financial status.
