The median survival time for people with polycythemia Vera is 14 years after diagnosis. The authors take this survival time from a study in which half of the participants were still alive 14 years after diagnosis. Younger people tend to live longer with the disease. Research suggests that the median survival time for those under 60 years of age is 24 years following diagnosis.

Prognosis depends on the cause of polycythemia. Primary polycythemia associated with myelodysplastic syndrome have poor prognosis. Polycythemia secondary to high altitude or smoking have a better prognosis if the cause is removed. Secondary polycythemia Will have good prognosis. Primary polycythemia has poor prognosis.

Polycythemia Blood stem cell disorder. It occurs mostly because of chromosomal abnormalities. Most patients with polycythemia can live long lives without functional impairments when they are managed with phlebotomy alone. Polycythemia does not transform into leukaemia.
