Expert opinion from Marcelle Freire

Doctor of Medicine · 3 years of experience · Brazil

Hyponatremia is the medical term used to describe an electrolyte and water disorder in which body water is increased relative to sodium, or body sodium is too low even with normal plasma volume. When this imbalance occurs, the patient may experience symptoms such as drowsiness, headaches, nausea and vomiting, weakness or even seizures and loss of consciousness. Depending on the level of sodium in the blood, hyponatremia is a serious condition and can, in some cases, lead to death.
