WHAT HAPPENS IF I LEAVE HS UNTREATED? WHAT HARVARD HEALTH PUBLISHING AND MORE DOCTORS THINK.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a long-term inflammatory skin condition marked by painful lumps and pustules, especially in the groin and armpits. Left untreated, HS may get worse over time and complications may develop such as connections or tracts between inflamed areas under the skin, infections, scarring or increasingly severe outbreaks. Treatment is typically recommended for all cases of HS to dampen down existing inflammation, reduce scarring, prevent flare-ups and reduce the risk of complications. Treatments include antibiotics, metformin, hormonal therapy, immune suppressing medications and/or surgery.

Over time if HS is left untreated, symptoms can worsen, and you may develop: tunnels. Which are tracts or channels that connect lumps and form under your skin. Painful, deep breakouts that go away and come back. Bumps that burst and leak a foul-smelling pus.
