SIR ALEX FERGUSON TAKEN TO HOSPITAL FROM OLD TRAFFORD AFTER FALLING ILL

Sir Alex Ferguson has been taken to hospital after falling ill at Old Trafford before Manchester United’s Premier League match against Liverpool.

The most successful manager in Premier League history received medical attention after falling ill, before leaving the ground before kick-off. Ferguson was first attended to by medical staff in the tunnel, with other personnel being told to vacate the area. United declined to comment when approached by Telegraph Sport.

On Sunday, Ferguson, 84, had been pictured with guests at the stadium a couple of hours before kick-off. He was initially taken to an ambulance at Old Trafford to be transferred to hospital for a check-up. Club officials are optimistic Ferguson will soon be fit enough to return home.

Speaking after United’s dramatic 3-2 victory against Liverpool, Michael Carrick, United’s current head coach who played under Ferguson from 2006 until 2013, said he hoped the result would give Ferguson a “good boost” as he recovers. “I did hear about it before the game so I was aware about that,” he said. “All I can say is I was affected – we wish him all the best and hopefully the result gives him a good boost.”

Ferguson remains a regular at United’s home and away matches, as well as at big horse racing meetings.

He appeared to have fallen ill soon after arriving at Old Trafford.

Ferguson’s condition is not an emergency, although little detail has been provided about the situation. United’s manager of 27 years, from 1986 to 2013, usually watches the club’s games from the directors’ box. There is no suggestion his latest illness is in any way connection to the brain haemorrhage he suffered in 2018. He subsequently said his wife Cathy, who died in 2023, had helped save his life at the time.

“I tried to get out my bed and just collapsed,” Ferguson said. “I was very fortunate because I fell against a shoe rack, and all the shoes fell out and made a noise, and Cathy was downstairs. She came up and got me sat up against the wall, and that’s the last thing I remember.”

He has previously spoken about the need to get out of the house after the death of his wife.

United began the match needing just two points to confirm their return to the Champions League, and enjoyed a commanding first half, taking a 2-0 lead. They were pegged back to 2-2 in the second half before Kobbie Mainoo scored a 77th-minute winner.

After 20 minutes, a chant of “every single one of us loves Sir Alex Ferguson” rang around Old Trafford. Ferguson has remained a regular at games since stepping down from his role as global ambassador at the end of 2024-25, and was pictured at Paris St-Germain’s remarkable 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final first leg last Tuesday night.
