Sir Nick Faldo has undergone open heart surgery and is heading back home to recover.
The six-time major winner, who now lives in rural Montana in the United States, said on social media that he had the procedure to repair an enlarged aorta.
“Headed home,” the 68-year-old’s team posted on X.
“After two weeks in Cleveland, Nick Faldo, and his wife, Lindsay, are on their way home following a successful, scheduled preventative open-heart surgery to repair his enlarged aorta, performed by world-renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Lars Svensson at The Cleveland Clinic.
“Nick is now looking ahead to returning to his golf course design work and to the Masters Week in Augusta, GA, where he will be celebrating ‘Six back in ‘96’.
“Home never felt so good.”
Faldo won the Masters and the Open three times apiece and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1997, as well as spending a total of 97 weeks as world number one.
“Six back in ‘96” refers to Faldo’s third Masters, and final major championship, when he chased down Greg Norman from six shots behind to win the Green Jacket with a final round 67.
The final day produced the famous image of Faldo consoling Norman on the 18th green, where he claims to have told the Australian: “Don’t let the b------s get you down.” Norman never won the Masters but had several near-misses at Augusta National.
After his playing career finished, Faldo became a fixture on CBS’s television coverage of the PGA Tour as a commentator and lead analyst. His dry sense of humour proved popular with the American viewing public.
Faldo stepped away from the commentary booth after 16 years in the job in August 2022.
In an interview with Telegraph Sport last year, the Englishman revealed he is on good terms with Donald Trump, with the US president calling Faldo while he was commentating on Tiger Woods’ 2019 Masters triumph.
