TAN TOCK SENG HOSPITAL INTRODUCES FLEXIBLE WORKING SHIFTS FOR NURSES

The initiative allows nurses to have a mix of routine and flexible shifts.

Singapore's Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has announced the roll-out of flexible working shifts for its nurses to promote work-life balance and strengthen care delivery.

Piloted in October 2023, the Liquid Nursing Initiative is expanded from one to three wards.

The initiative provides full-time TTSH nurses with six flexible shifts with variable start and finish times, allowing them to have a mix of routine and flexible shifts per month.

Ward nursing is classified into two roles, namely principal nurses and flexi-nurses.

Principal nurses will focus on clinical core roles such as participating in doctor rounds, whilst flexi-nurses support them in assisting with complex bedside procedures such as wound dressings.

Furthermore, the hospital has also trialled a procedural nurse role for surgically trained nurses supporting hospital-wide requests for assistance with lengthy bedside procedures.

Meanwhile, TTSH’s team is developing a software supported by artificial intelligence (AI) to enable full shifts and roster generation.
