It’s somehow possible to prevent secondary causes of polycythaemia. In this case, it is important to avoid low levels of blood oxygen for long periods. Smoking, living in high altitudes and some chronic cardiopulmonary diseases are all possible contributors to secondary polycythaemia. Controlling those factors will reduce the risk of polycythaemia.
