SELFLESS DEDICATION

It was heartening to see the Princess of Wales join the celebrations for the King’s birthday – her first public appearance since the announcement of her cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

It was a characteristic gesture of dedication and service, showing her determination to supporting her three children by standing alongside them, as well as honouring His Majesty by attending Trooping the Colour.

It was a reminder, too, of how much she is missed and the special place she holds in the public affection. Despite the rainy weather, her presence in the royal procession and on the balcony at Buckingham Palace will have helped brighten the occasion for all those who watched.

These are challenging times for the Royal family, with the King also undergoing a continued programme of cancer treatment. His resumption of public duties at the end of April was already a boost to the mood of the nation, and it was doubly reassuring to see them both braving the elements to enjoy the splendid pageantry of the occasion.

This appearance does not mark a return to full duties, as the Princess still has some months of treatment ahead. The taxing nature of chemotherapy causes her to have “good days and bad days”, as she acknowledged in her statement in advance of the event. However, she also said that she hopes to join a few public engagements over the summer as her health allows.

It is further proof of her indefatigable spirit that the Princess has already begun working from home when she feels able, and has started to attend some meetings. However, her first priority must remain recovering her full health, and in that she surely has the nation’s full support.

This was a good day, both for the country and for the Princess of Wales. Her attendance will have been a welcome sight to all. She, and the Royal family, will remain in our prayers as she continues her recovery.
