Overview
A congenital (by birth) narrowing of the aorta, the major blood vessel which carries blood from the heart to rest of the body.
Symptoms

Mild cases do not show symptoms. Symptoms in new borns may include:
- Blue / pale skin due to poor blood circulation

Causes
- The exact cause is not known but it is usually present at birth. This condition is the most common among birth defects.
It may be caused later in life due to:
- Traumatic injury
- Severe hardening of the arteries, atherosclerosis
- Condition causing inflamed arteries, takayasu’s arteritis
- Risk factors include
- Genetic abnormalities
- Having infections such as Rubella during pregnancy
- Maternal illnesses such as diabetes or autoimmune disorders
- Certain drugs like isotretinoin or lithium during pregnancy
- Maternal obesity
- Smoking/consuming alcohol during pregnancy
